An overview
The Institutional Biotech Hub at B.P. Chaliha College was established in the year 2011 under the aegis of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. The primary objective of establishing this advanced laboratory facility at the college level is to promote interest in biotechnology among students and researchers at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels, while also providing hands-on training in modern biological techniques through adequate infrastructural support. In addition to its research activities, the Biotech Hub has been actively involved in various academic and outreach programmes related to biological sciences. Since its inception, the Hub has regularly organized workshops, seminars, awareness programmes, and hands-on training sessions for students, teachers, and stakeholders from the institution as well as nearby schools and colleges.
After the successful completion of Phase I, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, has been sanctioned Rs. 31,55,200.00 (Rupees Thirty-one Lakh Fifty-Five Thousand Two Hundred only) on 21 February, 2023 for the implementation of the project entitled “DBT-NER Institutional Level Biotech Hub at B.P. Chaliha College, Kamrup, Assam (Phase II)” for a period of 3 years 0 Months with the following Objectives:
1. To conduct hands-on training/workshops.
2. To perform outreach activities.
3. To organize faculty improvement programmes.
4. To implement student-oriented small research projects on local resources.
5. To produce compost manures, mushrooms, biofertilizers, etc.

Five-day Hands-on training on “Basic Instrumentation of Microbial Biotechnology” was organized on 26 -30th March 2024 in collaboration with the Department of Botany, B.P. Chaliha College. The program was inaugurated by the principal and delivered a warm welcome speech. Resource persons were Prof. Kumanand Tayung, Department of Botany, Gauhati Univerisity and Subham Roy, Research Scholar, Gauhati University. A total number of 47 students participated in the program.

Two days hands-on training on DNA Isolation Technique was organized on 22-23rd March 2024. The program was chaired by Dr. Kamal Chandra Pathak, Principal, B.P. Chaliha College. Mr. Arun Kr. Sarkar, Coordinator of the IQAC, inaugurated the program by delivering a speech about the importance of the program. Resource person Dr. Sanjib Kumar Das, NITS, Mirza, Assam led the practical session. A total of 29 participants participated in the program.
